Guidance for Close Reading Lessons

Sample Close Reading Lessons for selected titles in EMC are available at the PPS Language Arts website. These Close Reading Lessons were designed for multiple purposes, which include:

• Support to teachers in ensuring that students meet the rigorous expectations of the ELA Common Core Standards and Smarter Balanced Assessments 
• Serve as models for extending Close Reading strategies to other texts and content areas (e.g., science, social studies) 
• Support teachers in expanding approaches to teaching comprehension 
• Build on the work of the Basal Alignment Project – a nation-wide effort by the Council of Great City Schools to support urban districts in aligning core reading materials to the ELA Common Core Standards
