NGSS Physical Science Opportunity for 4th & 6th Teachers



Ignite & invigorate your practice in the NEW Year with a Connect2Science: ENERGY course specifically developed for 4th and 6th grade STEM School Transformational Teachers in partnership with PGE and Portland Metro STEM Partnership Teachers Academy.

Join colleagues as you focus on the Next Generation Science Stands Disciplinary Core Ideas of Physical Sciences: ENERGY targeting 4th & 6th grade learning progressions, culturally responsive pedagogy, Common Core-Math, & Engineering.

This course has the unique opportunity to be a part of the STEM Center professional development research work. Student engagement and cultural relevancy will be reflected on in the Teacher Self-Efficacy pre-post survey. The instructors will use information from this survey to specifically nuance the after school sessions to serve the groups’ instructional needs. Teachers will collect and reflect on data from a student survey (vs. a teacher survey) that will provide you with information about your students’ perceptions of the relevance and student-centeredness of your classroom.

As part of a STEM Center Hub Grant, participants receive a $150 stipend for participation in this research. The stipend is for course participants who:
·      Attend all sessions
·      Have students complete Pre/Post Student Survey of Instructional Practices (Students will complete this approximately 20 minute survey on the computer prior to unit of instruction and after the last follow-up course session.
·      Complete the pre Teacher Survey and post Teacher Survey after the follow-ups.
The course can be taken as a 3 credit graduate course; $221 tuition fee - Tuition Invoicing may be available

Student Surveys/Data Collection
The STEM Partnership Director of Research will provide a summary of aggregated data analysis from all students. Individual teachers will receive a data summary of the aggregated student's responses in a sealed envelope for personal reflection. Therefore, no individual teacher or student will be identifiable.
