Text Set Project: Free PD

K-5 Teachers and Teacher Librarians

Register here by May 18, 2015

Who Should Attend: K-5 Teachers, Teacher Librarians, and District Librarians (Attendees should form teams of one librarian and two-three classroom teachers. It is suggested that the librarian serve as the team lead. Please contact Nicole Dalton at nicole.dalton@state.or.us with questions or for help forming a team.)  Please note that this PD conflicts with the PK-3 Literacy Institute 6/22-6/24, so please choose one or the other.

The training will involve:
·         Learning the research base underlying the critical role knowledge-building  and vocabulary plays in reading success.
·         Coaching and support in selecting the books and articles that could form a solid text set, learning how to sequence the set effectively, and how to support students in building knowledge about the world and words as they read the texts for themselves.
·         Support that goes home with you. Extending beyond the in-person training, expert reviewers work with production teams remotely, reviewing and coaching the materials until the Text Sets are ready to be published.
Please see the Text Set Project Training Opportunities flyer and Portland TSP Agenda for more information about the training and the project as a whole. Breakfast and lunch will be provided at the training. Participants will receive 24 PDUs and may have the opportunity to earn course credit.

Commitment: Team leads should plan for some work before the training to identify the team’s topic and do some preliminary research into texts. All team members should be able to attend the two-day training session as well as an additional 8-10 hours of work following the training to complete their text set following the Text Set Project’s revision process.
