PSU Scholarship Opportunity


Scholarship Opportunity

The Portland State University Graduate School of Education Department of Special Education is pleased to offer a scholarship for full tuition support through special education licensure. We are seeking individuals interested in working with children and youth with autism, intellectual disabilities, multiple disabilities, and/or behavioral disorders who come from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. 

Requirements to apply:
·         Bachelor’s degree or Bachelor’s equivalent
·         Completed application to the Special Education licensure program
·         Have experience/desire to work with students from culturally/linguistically diverse backgrounds who require intensive supports (e.g., students with multiple disabilities)
·         Have a linguistically diverse background and/or
·         Unique skills to serve culturally/linguistically diverse students who require intensive supports
·         Commitment to teaching as a special educator for at least two years

The program has a strong interest in recruiting candidates who are bilingual in any language or that come from a culturally diverse background. 

Program Options
·         1 Year full-time (at least 16-credits per term) OR
·         2 Year part-time program (at least 6 credits per term)

Mathematics Education and Society Conference


The MES 8 Conference is a forum for discussing the social, political, cultural, and ethical dimensions of mathematics education. The Conference aims to:
  • Bring together mathematics educators from around the world to disseminate research that explores these dimensions of mathematics education.
  • Discuss theoretical and methodological issues related to research of this type, to foster international co-operation in the area. 
  • Develop a strong research community interested in these dimensions. 
The residential nature of the conference, in which all participants reside at the same venue, is a key feature of MES conferences and is designed to encourage the development of such an interactional community.

Previous conferences took place in Nottingham (UK, 1998), Montechoro (Portugal, 2000), Helsingør (Denmark, 2002), Gold Coast (Australia, 2004), Albufeira (Portugal, 2008), Berlin (Germany, 2010), and Cape Town, South Africa (2012).


The 8th Mathematics Education and Society Conference (MES 8) will take place in Portland, Oregon, USA and is being hosted by Portland State University.

 How do I participate in STEM Week Oregon?


Educators (in-school and out-of-school):  Incorporate fun and innovative STEM activities into your classroom or program anytime from May 2 – May 10 2015. Encourage your school, organization and fellow educators to do the same!
Principals:  Engage your entire school in celebrating STEM Day. Encourage each teacher in every subject to celebrate STEM in a creative way
Students: Get excited about STEM and join in your classroom STEM Day activities! Find out more ways you can get involved in STEM learning outside of school.
Community Organizations: Host STEM activities for youth and families in your community to generate excitement for STEM.
Companies and STEM Professionals:  Sign-up for Oregon Connections to volunteer at a local school, speak about your exciting STEM career, or host a field trip for students at your business for local students.
Colleges and Universities: Raise STEM awareness on your campus by hosting community STEM activities for students and/or the broader community, encourage your students to partner with local K-12 institutions. Artistic Director Needed for Aurora Chorus of Portland




Aurora Chorus of Portland, Oregon, seeks an Artistic Director for its winter term 2015 as sabbatical replacement for Joan Szymko. Program, rehearse and conduct a non-traditional seasonal winter concert for this 90-member women’s chorus.
Salary: $1760/month August – December.
Rehearsals on Thursday evenings beginning September 10, 2015. Concerts on December 13, 2015: matinee and evening performances.
Plan for an 80-minute concert without intermission. Examples of prior concerts available online at AuroraChorus.org along with access to our choral library catalog listing over 500 titles.

Project Lead The Way (PLTW)  teacher registration is now open.  To register go to https://www.pltw.org/get-involved/register-pltw This year we are offering Gateway To Technology (GTT) Design & Modeling (DM) July 6th – 10th and Automation & Robotics (AR) July 13th – 17th, Introduction to Engineering Design (IED), Principles Of Engineering (POE) also offered July 6 – 19th.  PLTW training is held at OIT campus Klamath Falls.  Tuition is  $1,125.00 for each GTT course food $425.00 and tuition for IED & POE is $2,250.00 with lodging/meals $950.00.  Contact Barbara.metcalf@oit.edu if you have questions or call 541-885-1494.

Oregon Math Leaders 2015 (OML)

Who:  You and between 100-200 other Oregon Math Educators
When:   August 2-4, 2015 (Sunday afternoon-Tuesday afternoon)
Where:  Willamette University located in Salem.
Why:  Because you want to improve the math education in your classroom, your school your district, or across the state.  This gathering of teachers will be a prime to continue to learn how to effectively teach mathematics for deeper conceptual understanding.

George Washington Teacher Summer Institute


Established in 1999, the George Washington Teacher Institute Summer Residential Program is a highly competitive educational experience that brings teachers to Mount Vernon, Virginia for an intensive week of study at Washington's home. Participating teachers are immersed in the study and discussion of the remarkable role George Washington played in the founding of our nation and this critical period of American history.

PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO:


  • Examine the character and accomplishments of George Washington while living on his 18th Century estate
  • Engage in active discussion of 18th Century history with top historians

This professional evening is for in-service, pre-service and homeschool teachers only. Guests and family members will not be admitted to this event. Valid school-issued ID (or business card or pay stub), or confirmation of intent to homeschool will be required at the door.

The Library of Congress Summer Teacher Institutes

Immerse yourself in the practice of teaching with primary sources from the unparalleled collections of Library of Congress this summer. Apply to attend a week-long professional development program for K-12 educators in the nation’s capital.
In 2015, the Library will offer five Institute weeks:
  • Open sessions (any subject area): June 22-26, July 6-10 or July 27-31
  • Science focus: July 20-24
  • Civil rights focus: August 3-7
Application Deadline: March 24th, 2015
Each Institute week, Library of Congress education specialists facilitate sessions modeling strategies for using primary sources to engage students, build critical thinking skills, and construct knowledge. Participants reflect on and discuss how the strategies apply to their students, subject areas, and classrooms or school libraries.

ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarships


Inform Your Students Today About the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarships

Named for the first African American to walk in space, ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarships are available to 2015 graduating high school seniors in school districts represented by the Council of the Great City Schools.

Four scholarships for two males and two females --- $5,000 each --- will be awarded to two African American and two Hispanic students on behalf of the former NASA astronaut, physician and businessman, Dr. Bernard Harris, and ExxonMobil.  Deadline for submissions is April 8, 2015

OHS Learning Portal Advisory Committee

The Oregon Historical Society (OHS) is seeking volunteers, visitors, local educators, and other community members to be part of the Learning Portal Advisory Committee. The Learning Portal will be an interactive learning space opening at OHS in 2015. It will serve as a cultural meeting ground for young visitors to better engage with and appreciate the depth and variety of the state’s history.

We are seeking three teachers, three parents of young children (age 3-8), and two K-12 students representing diverse Oregon experiences to provide ideas, advice, and feedback on the Learning Portal’s design and content creation. Candidates should have a passion for education, especially museum-based education. We are looking for people interested in working collaboratively on creative ways to engage a broader audience with Oregon’s dynamic, diverse, and interconnected history.

Ronald Yoshimoto, M.Ed, M.S.W., is a Fellow of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham (OG) Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE). He has more than 30 years’ experience in the fields of social work, education and dyslexia. He has been a social worker, counselor, teacher, educational diagnostician, principal, consultant and teacher trainer. He was principal of ASSETS School, a private school for students with dyslexia and gifted children, for 18 years.

Free Wellness Program for Middle School Teachers

WHAT:  Recruiting Middle School Teacher for a Wellness Program and Study.   
This free, mindfulness-based stress reduction program is aimed at the occupational health and wellbeing of teachers. The program is free to teachers, and provides an opportunity for PSU to study its potential value for educators.
